You can see the birth of the american empire through his life. He grew up during the tail end of the "American Indian wars." He joined the military at 16 and was deployed to Haiti, Cuba, Philipines, China, Nicaragua and Mexico before heading off to WW1.
I always wondered why the owner class would choose the guy who would write "War is a Racket" for the business plot.
Fantastic story, and the novel is worth reading
