The official invidio.us instance will be shutting down on 1st Sept and the lead developer will be stepping away from the project.

Noooooooooo. :( I’m confused. It seems it could stay alive bc it’s open source though. It’s a pretty widely used service. Hopefully it doesn’t die.

Yea, I self-host my own instance that I use every day, so I hope it doesn't die. Looking at the commits though, it looks like the majority of the dev work was being done by Omar (the lead dev).

True but like is it not just a nice web ui for YouTube-dl ? Like it should be pretty easy to simply maintain... but maybe not I dunno.

I could be wrong, but I believe invidious uses it's own API

Currently you can at least still follow YouTube videos with rss and then play them in mpv or something. It works pretty well but having a nice desktop client like newpipe would be best imo

Check out Freetube. I find it a bit less pleasant to use than invidious because you have to manually refresh subscriptions like in NewPipe, but aside from that its a pretty good alternative.

I hate to say it, but I was expecting this to happen, and I never used it for this specific reason. r/linux banned the use of YouTube links—requiring users to submit invidio.us links instead—and now all those posts will have broken links.

In theory I think you could replace invidio.us/stringofletters to youtube.com/stringofletters and get the video anyways but yeah this is going to be a problem

Hopefully invidio.us will be replaced with a redirect page so those links continue to work. https://github.com/iv-org/invidious/issues/1321

What is this? Should I care? I checked the website and it's just spammed with re-uploaded Jon Tron videos and I don't know much about them other than reactionary shit on livestreams.

It's an alternative front-end for YouTube, similar to NewPipe on android. Basically lets you watch YouTube videos without all of google's tracking bullshit. In my experience its also less eager to put Joe Rogan and PragerU bullshit in your recommendations.

No worries, the default trending page is probably a bit off-putting, lol
