My MIL is permanently bed ridden bc of an injury.

We were talking to her insurance about getting this bed topper that moves her around so that she doesn’t get bed sores at the suggestion of her home health team

When they made the request the insurance denied it bc “she doesn’t have any bed sores yet”

She ended up getting it but it really is emblematic of how USA healthcare is always reactive never proactive. Unless you’re like super rich I guess or something idk but I’ve never experienced genuine preventative medical treatment in this country

Idk how to say this without sounding totally heartless, so please forgive me if it does. But if there's a possibility your mil will need Medicaid or some assistance like that in the future you should look into getting any finances or property out of her name (or potentially even her spouse, if there is one) as soon as possible. Most states have a five year window they look back on for gifts and things like that they'll require surrender of in order to put them under the financial threshold for assistance. My grandmother was particularly hard up years ago, on her deathbed, and the hoops we were going to have to jump through for Medicaid assistance would have financially fucked my grandfather over if she hadn't passed the day that she did. Again, sorry if this too blunt, but this is not the sort of stuff you want to put off thinking about till too late.

No I appreciate it, a lot of people don’t know about this stuff until they’re in the situation so I think it’s good to talk about

“Luckily” for her she’s a poor immigrant so she doesn’t really have much to her name to block her from getting Medicaid in theory. Unfortunately it’s been a nightmare getting her approved anyway bc of her migrant status and other stuff. (Despite me being assured by my family that immigrants are given houses and 5k a month just for jumping the border)

You have to be below 5% of total HP to get authorization to drink the health potion.

Also in some states, the law requires you to find one of these companies to knowingly give money to and receive nothing in return
