In an email, a city hall spokesman wrote: “Not all of them articulated why they left, but of those who did some – said they obtained another job offer [which is outside of law enforcement]; indicated an hour commute was no longer feasible for them; or simply changed their mind and did not provide any reason beyond that.”
yeah, the week where they explain why it's important to engage in domestic abuse at 4x the average rate is a real buzzkill for the non-reptiles.

back when i was still on , i was reading one of those large general advice subs. can't remember which, but it was apolitical and all that. anyway, some woman in mid/late 20s was "having a problem at work" wherein people at work were spreading rumors about her sexual history and that she was serial cheating on her husband with coworkers etc etc. just gross, malicious shit. none of it was true of course and she was asking how she should deal with it professionally. then she drops the bomb. "i'm a cop, btw".
the top response was that if it were any other profession, the move would be to contact HR and several tiers of supervisors, document everything, and be prepared to advocate for yourself, litigation, etc. but since they were a cop, the commentor did not feel this was safe due to the pervasive culture of harassment and bullying in US policing which is extremely resistant to reform. not to mention, de facto immunity from investigation or prosecution for murder. they recommended the person try and solicit advice anonymously through national associations or strongly consider exiting the organization.
i've worked in institutions with a reputation for bullying and harassment and it is fucking toxic. but i shudder to imagine the same place if every fucking asshole is walking around with a gun on their hip and the ability to hurt, maim, incarcerate, and kill with total impunity.
I recently spoke to a police seargent at a wedding (I would not have otherwise obv.) and they kept complaining about how no one wants to be a cop anymore and there are shortages in all nearby districts, and that people really, really don't want to be cops on reserves anymore because the tribes hate them.
Turns out that the lack of cops is due to peer pressure. They aren't getting recruits because anyone who joins gets bullied by their friends and socially ostracized. Cops have such a bad rap now that even raising pay doesn't always work because good pay can't override being a pariah.
God we love to see it. The 2020 uprisings didn't accomplish what they set out to, but they definitely did something pretty fucking big
I'm having an instant flashback to the police recruits who were like "I would see if I can avoid killing the person" and the trainers yelling at them saying maybe they weren't cut out to be cops
They're going to use this as an excuse to expand police budgets. They'll say "if we pay them more they'll come!" They aren't wrong either. Lots of people will do lots of horrible things for enough cash
