Remember, being a successful Socialist country means that you are imperialist. Only small isolated socialism is acceptable. Any attempt at actual global revolution is bad.
Modern China isn't even "imperialist" by supporting communist revolutions in other countries anymore. What makes them "imperialist" is their continued support for the DPRK (because they don't want to share a border with a US client state) and the fact that they have loaned money to other countries to build roads and ports and shit (despite the fact that Chinese loans are still dwarfed by IMF/WB loans to those same countries).
You could argue that the USSR was imperialist - I would disagree with you because I don't consider supporting proletarian revolutions to be imperialism, but you could argue it - but anyone saying it about China literally doesn't know what they're talking about.
