Unironically kinda want Leman Russ. I have a newfound respect for the Space Wolves after reading The Emperor's Gift. Got the Combat Patrol after it and wanna build them up a little.
Simultaneously, since he's fucking around in the Eye of Terror, I hope he returns as a literal half wolf monstrosity and the Space Wolves reject him, causing half to go with him as a Chaos-aligned group and the other half to stay loyalists.
Yeah if they are gonna bring back more loyalist then do it like this. Corvus Corax is another fucked up warp monster I believe. I'd also like to see some Loyalist reject the decayed state of the Imperium and strike out on their own, maybe the ones who barely stayed loyal in the first place like the Khan.
I would love to see the White Scars convert. Legitimately want to see a new Heresy era fall upon the Imperium, and Magnus seems to be trying to facilitate that with his New Kingdom. Gods I hope so.
Don't remind me. I hate it. I am listening to Fulgrim (ironically enough) right now, and it was describing Ferrus Manus as practically an ugly bastard. It made a note that literally every other primarch was considered beautiful and stuff while Ferrus was just not at all, lol.
And I'm sick and tired of the Blood Angels and Ultramarines. I'll be so mad if they continue to get more love.
There's more Primarus lieutenants than there are models for entire factions lmao. Space Marines are incredibly spoiled, but I think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy from GW. Space Marines sell well because they're heavily marketed and they get regular releases, which causes them to sell well, so they get....and so on and so forth.
Imo loyalist primarchs coming back takes away from the idea that the Imperium is a place of crumbling decay. Between Bobby G & primarus (a rant for another day) it feels like they want to have their cake and eat it too. The Imperium is falling apart, barely functioning, technology is stagnant at best, but somehow they also get a flood of new recruits (here I thought suitable marine recruits were supposed to be somewhat rare) with shiney new wargear & vehicles and the primarchs that is basically Emperor Jr is back in charge.
Maybe marine fans have a different perspective but the contradiction between the Imperium's ostensible decline & suddenly every chapter gets a flood of recruits & new advanced gear takes away from it for me.
I play Black Templar and I don't like the Bobby and Primarus stuff for the reasons you've said (that's been shared by a billion other people every time it comes up). I also dislike how it takes away from each factions' playstyle.
Loyalist primarchs are basically greater demons/demon princes. Coupled with mono-weapon units, there's not much difference between Chaos and Loyalist marines except how many spikes are on each. Then there's factions like Craftworld Eldar. Marines basically have better Aspect Warriors than they do, plus the dumb anti-grav tanks.
And from here we get Grey Knights/Death Watch, who are space marines but cooler. But that's not enough, so we have to have even cooler Custodes. Eventually we're going to end up with bigger Custodes with all the special weapons who are super duper cooler and will totally beat up your dad.
You bring up a great point about how they affect playstyles, and I think it's not just marines that are victims of this. Recent years have really seen GW pushing "centerpiece models" that they want to be almost essential to play a faction on the tabletop (Silent King, Norn emissary, Lord Solar, etc).
Between that, eviscerating wargear/loadout options, & a general focus on "competitive play" 🤮 it feels like there's way less customization/variety in army lists.
I haven't played tabletop in well over a decade, I just read books and play the roleplaying games now. That being said I agree that the loyalist primarchs coming back isn't great but I guess they have to maintain the stalemate against chaos.
IMO only Chaos should get primarchs. Therefore, Bobby G. should get murked by Fulgrim, along with Johnny, so things can go back to normal.
SM players need to get a new toy every time another faction does or they'll get mad, so get ready for Leman Russ to show up sometime next year.
i'm low-key hoping they do the stupidest thing possible and we get ferrus manus coming back as a head in a jar plugged into a robot.
Personally I'd want for the head to just be attached at the neck to the necrodermis hand so he's a little guy scuttling around.
Both of these are far too cool to happen though, and by far the mostly likely outcome is that one of Fabulous Bill's clones escapes.

Sadly he will be a bishounen anime boy because GW refuses to make loyalist SM look like anything other than beautiful poster boys.
Semi-seriously though my money's on him showing up with a 13th company release. Imo it's that or some Sanguinor bullshit for Bangles.
