TL;DR no records found. Either HB really is a bunch of libs or I didn't word the request well enough. Never done one of these before.

Dope. Reported for snitching. I'm not an opsec guy but I don't email the fucking feds
I can't tell if this is a bit but I did this by the request of another user and it's a request for info, not a tip line. I mean HB is a public, anonymously readable social media site I promise I'm not letting them in on some kind of secret. And in any case had it returned results I think it definitely would've been in HB's collective interest to know.
Post won't load and it's not a bit. There is no good reason to emailing the feds and potentially getting more attention. It's pointless as well a reckless. Just like, always keep your mouth shut. It'd a low risk, but an absolutely senseless one that you've taken on behalf of everyone here. Getting neat little stats isn't worth emailing the feds over. No one here agreed to it and it could potentially endanger people. Probably won't. But what is the gain in this risk? Turns out it's nothing. Don't email the feds. You are a snitch
Here's a screenshot of the post if it's still not loading for you: https://files.catbox.moe/xgcr20.jpg
I do get what you're saying, and it was probably against the best judgement. Though I think the risk level considering the circumstances is very low, please everyone remember that this site is completely public and in the open. Wouldn't have dreamed of it otherwise. Stay safe and organize in appropriate spaces.
Just cause someone said you should do it doesn't mean you should
It's dry snitching at worst. Do we have an explicit policy or rule about unilateral off-site action that leads or implicates hexbear?
We probably should, ideally, but this is basically an open forum on the clearnet so it would just be an exercise in good discipline and education for the future heroes of the revolution that spring from our ashes. This user simply goof'd and we should have a chuckle about it and never do it again unless we have a damn good reason to like if the warrant canary sings. Even then I would leave those decisions in the hands of other comrades and dip out. (hopefully reunite elsewhere from a distant proxy and a properly compartmentalised profile and identity)
This draws attention to the need for better education and reminders to be mindful that our users are global, some of them live within very real live threat matrices, and some of them are feds. Ie. don't make a decision after weighing it against your own threat model but imagine the most vulnerable and furtive user and act in accordance with protecting their safety.
I don't care about intent. It's negligent and should getting banned is the punishment of making a new account. I don't see thar as too harsh for literally talking to the feds. That isn't being thrown in a pit. Quite a few users lately have been banned for significantly more.petty reasons and slow mod action on this is suspect as hell to me tbh
Willfully talking to the feds is snitching, end of story. This is shit that would get your knees blown off and teeth picked in in certain circles. Talking to the feds or pigs is snitching. It literally doesn't matter why you did it, only the fact that you did. If you talk, you are a snitch and nothing you do will change the fact that you are a snitch who talked instead of keeping their goddamn mouth shut.

correct. nobody has to contact the feds, as a bit or otherwise. I really don't care whether it's "low risk" or not, there's no real reason to do it and nothing to be gained, as the response from them shows.
You're massively reading into things
Elaborate
You finding it suspect the mods aren't deleting this post but do remove celebration of an "idiocracy is a documentary" guy is a large reach.
Deleting the post at this point would not be in anyone's interest. This happened.
It should be locked and archived in c/badposting and linked to as a reminder during future education efforts of the sorts of things a careless person might think is totally harmless because they don't face the same threats that other users on the federated network of sites do.
Agreed!
Cause emailing the feds about here is worse? There is a measurable difference here? It's probably fine and harmless but just like...don't email the feds and suffer mild consequences. All of my negative relies are also from non hexbear users and I don't respect non hexbear users.
Please take a moment to recognise that FOIA requests are issued by journalists, weirdos and random youtubers who think they're breaking a story, all the time, pursuing random bullshit that leads nowhere.
Further reflect on the Snowden leaks and the much higher probability that the most vulnerable users here are probably outside of the imperial core. I'm thinking mainly people living under parallel surveillance due to local action in places where the cops don't fuck around and use nation-state scale contracting agencies do their data work for them.
Also consider smaller five-eyes nations known to trade and share in mass surveillance efforts, many of whom have domestic political toy issues and more investment in surveillance than their material threats would warrant. Many users from these nations have to consider whether their local federal intelligence agency is feeding hexbear through a heuristic search system looking for someone to make an example out of to win an election.
And consider that none of this is a real threat if you are not actually doing anything. Which none of us are. We are all shitposting about the news and learning (mostly through osmosis, tbh) about economic theory.
Finally consider that you declared yourself "not an opsec guy" so if you mean you don't know about or practice good opsec hygiene and threat modelling etc, then let me reassure you that this is really like, not actually a major fuckup that puts hexbear at great risk, without some incredibly coincidental bad luck in the mix.
If you mean "I am not the one to harp on about opsec like a bore" then I respect your restraint, but you could do an effortpost to help educate people to be wiser about how they use the site, the risks using a site like this poses, how to accurately assess the risk and whether defensive steps need to be taken and if so how far down the rabbit hole they'd need to go to continue posting here.
Otherwise you ARE being that opsec guy and in my estimate, are overreacting to a funny blunder.
I am comfortable telling you, truthfully, that I shitpost about assassinating CEOs, live in one of what I consider, the riskier parts of the world to make "terroristic threat" jokes on the internet as far as getting to be left alone by our feds and that I do it all from my home IP address. I'm engaging in classic social media fed-baiting when I do this. I have nothing to hide, I'm squeaky clean and just curious to see if I ever get a knock on the door and a boring interview.
Maybe you see it differently, but please ease up. I really don't think this is grounds for moderator intervention except to move the whole fuckin thread to c/badposting. Casting aspersions on the mod team's reaction or rhetorically forcing them to make a decision in line with your ban request, is over the top.
So, I think, is going in on the poster who has pretty much humiliated themself at this point without guile or smug defense of their actions, unmasked their HB account and has otherwise acted in accordance with the actions of someone who made a reasonably harmless (or actually kind of hilarious) "misstep" according to any reasonable opsec analysis of the situation.
I could write an expose on HB tomorrow and send it to a news site and draw more attention than this did. We're federated for fuck sake.
Sorry. I hate that I'm sounding heated at this point because we had a great exchange in another thread yesterday and I enjoy your posts which is the most honest and least weird way to express the sentiment of "I like this person in the community" I can think of in this sort of community.
I'm just trying to mediate with my perspective as a "reality check" (that vibes ableist and/or condescending but I don't know a better turn of phrase, not intended, I apologise if this is offensive) here and hopefully turn the heat down a little.
So its "probably fine and harmless", but worse than celebrating a dude who believes in phrenology?
In practice yes
In principle yes
