I'm really interested in it since I love Roguelikes, but it's an older one from before they came the indie game phenomenon they are now.
How does it compare to something like Risk of Rain 2 or Dead Cells? Anything i should know going into it? Might give it a shot on the handheld on the road this weekend.
Baroque is an interesting one.
The PS2 version you're talking about is actually a remake of the original with a completely different gameplay style. The original Baroque was a first-person dungeon crawler on the Sega Saturn (later remixed and released on the PS1 as well) similar to the old King's Field games by Fromsoft.
The story and vibes are very Shin Megami Tensei-esque. Very heavy religious tones mixed with a post-apocalyptic, cassette-futurism aesthetic. It's a game where you want to talk to NPCs until their dialogue is exhausted and actually pay close attention to what they say.
Regarding progression, it's similar to other proto-roguelites of the time (thinking Fatal Labyrinth/Dragon's Crystal) where inventory space is limited and consumables are unidentified until used. There is also a way to pass items from one run to the next, but I'll let you figure that out. Death itself isn't the end in this game and is just part of the progression.
I think it's pretty neat, but I haven't played the PS2 version. Good luck!
I've heard good things and that's about it. Just bumping so maybe someone else says some stuff of substance for your sake.
I know the soundtrack goes pretty hard and it's very confusing. I heard the original is better and been meaning to play either one tbh.
Technically, there are three versions: Baroque (Sega Saturn), Baroque Distorted Delusions (PS1), and Baroque International (PS2) version.
Theres also the Manga and the Prequel VN Baroque Syndrome. Theres like one old site with good information about these games in english.
Yeah, this game even had a Worlds (you know, the very old MMO were you could chat with people like second life) dlc exclusive to Japan.
Baroque PS1/Saturn, it was never released outside Japan iirc. I believe it did get a port for the Switch but idk.
Theres also a Manga and a Visual Novel called Baroque Syndrome but theres very little info in english about this. The manga has it's fans and the games too.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Same title but for the Sega saturn, from what I hear more stuff was added for the PS2 and Wii tho
No idea, but it looks really interesting. I'd be interested in your opinion if you do.
I've seen it, i believe it's a remake of a Ps1/Sega Saturn game. I really like the graphics and the world, but the gameplay is very repetitive. Theres also a Wii port for it too.
