    With the erosion of personal freedoms and a solely materialistic approach to problems, most communist nations fell behind in the race to progress. Didn’t help that the bureaucracy too often proved corrupt and inefficient (in part, due to the apparatus of state security) and that paranoia led to a massive (and expensive) military complex.

    This describes the modern day US almost perfectly.
