Watched it for the first time ever. Had it's moments, but was pretty cliche, tbh
Maybe it's like Seinfeld or Half Life where it seems cliche because it started those cliches
i'm not saying it isn't cliche, but it's weird to say that about a movie that is like 20 years old

Yeah, I watched it for the first time this last year and thought it was pretty standard, nothing special. I haven’t seen the original Japanese movie, though. Maybe that’s better.
It is, but I think you have to watch it first as the effects don't hold up that well.
I remember the cartoon sound effect that plays when the girl falls down the well in the Japanese version.
