He believed a life of simple pleasures in moderation was the key to happiness. He spent all day gardening and discussing philosophy, and then had a glass of wine and (CW: carnism) cheese before bed. He was also an empiricist who believed the world was made of atoms, and he taught that fear of death was the cause of a great deal of human suffering. He believed people should act with kindness in order to ease their own conscience, instead of doing it because they're scared of divine punishment.
