I'm a huge Mother fan sicko-ness, but I never played the NES Mother until now (I'm up to Magicant). I always figured NES RPGs would be too archaic for me to enjoy, but I'm having a great time. The dialogue is just as weird and silly as Earthbound and Mother 3. I love that there is an enemy that is literally just a farmer called Wally.

This is suprisingly good for a game that is literally older than me.

Holy shit I get to experience a Mother game for the first time again. floppy-parrot

I played a fan-translated rom called Earthbound Zero

I don't think it was translated very well because they stuck in a lot of unnecessary cursing and off-color jokes

Is there any particular order I should play earthbound or mother in? Or does it not matter

There are winks and nods to previous entrees, particularly in Mother 3, but on the whole, it doesn't matter. Personally, I played Earthbound (Mother 2) first in like 2000 because Ness was in SSB64 and I was discovering emulators and was like "I wonder if the game Ness is from is good"

Sweet thanks! Do the games emulate well or better on original hardware?

They emulate perfectly. Mother 3 pretty much has to be emulated anyway if you want it in English, as there is no official translation. But the fan translation that is famously good, so it might as well be official. http://mother3.fobby.net/
