God, I hope we get a true Paper Mario 3 one day...one day...

(Super Paper Mario was also very good, just not as good imo.)

Have you played Oragami King? Jesus it's bad. I don't know how they could fuck up so badly.

I thought the writing was hysterical but the actual game play seemed pretty boring, haven't bought the game but would love to hear your thoughts on it

You've basically nailed it. The battles are not fun, the new battle system is over engineered, and doesn't return any fun for the new complexity. I'm also disappointed with how the partners have been minimized. The outside-of-combat elements were not particularly fun or exciting for me, either.

they're following that nintendo "it has to have a gimmick the whole game is based around" ideology to a complete fault. They definitely should just go back to the original battle system and find a way to innovate on that instead of reinventing the wheel every time.

Also I definitely agree with you about the partners. The only good thing I can say is that since they're more woven into the narrative they were able to give them a bit more of a role, dialogue, and stake in what was going on where in the previous games they usually only have a couple quips here or there. But its definitely reaching. I'd prefer theyd bring back a full team with unique abilities and stuff

The new combat system is very weird, and does not really add fun to the game, in my opinion. Also, they've largely reduced the partner system in the game to being little more than having a token cheerleader with Mario in battle - this is the most egregious change in my opinion. More subjectively speaking, I feel like something has been lost visually between TYD and Origami King. Origami King seems lacking inspiration.

well part of the problem is most (if not all) of the original people behind PM and TYD left the company. But also nintendo told them they're not allowed to use anything but standard mario races and they're not allowed to change them in any real way. So that definitely hampers them a ton creatively speaking.

it's really silly bc for me paper mario stretching the boundaries of the mario universes was one of its draws. I mean, toads and koopas were stale when tyd came out they're beyond that now. I think that's why people hate the new style because they basically ripped out a core element of the game in the service of beating you over the head with recognizable characters.

But nope. Two generic toad characters.

yeah at some point they decided to double down on whatever they already had and keep pushing that for everything but apparently the 'flag-ship' 3D marios. Really frustrating to see odyssey get so many unique locations and characters and barely use them, meanwhile paper mario's like "hey i'm bob omb the bob omb." haha

ah yea, every animal crossing is basically the same game with 3 new features. I love animal crossing cuz I played it a lot in my childhood but the new one definitely didn't hold my attention cuz it seemed some how a step back, stagnant, and a minor step forward on a few things all at the same time.

Pokemon is weird for me, I quit playing pokemon after crystal and never touched it again until swsh so my perspective on it is completely warped. When people were mad about dexit I was like "woooooaaaah look at all these crazy new pokemon" since they were pretty much all new to me lol

                          later added through dlc.)

oh guys good news, we found a way that corrects that problem and also just so happens that we can monetize the solution lol 🙃

but yea AC is just a vibe more than anything i guess. Just cool to veg out and listen to some podcasts while you play. But there's definitely so much room for them to expand it. I really wish theyd have explored the idea of having more stores, regions, and stuff like that to check out.

not that guy but I don't share the opinion that its horrible but I can totally understand people having it. The paper mario community has basically splintered into people who were just so ready for anything half ass decent that they jumped all over it with praise and doomers. (edit, not saying that op was being a doomer that's just been most of the 'discourse' since TOK dropped)

Imo, it's a lot better than anything theyve done since SPM. But the battle system is silly and honestly gets hella tedious about half way through. It's not even that bad at first but a few hours in and your like.. "uggggh I dont want to fight these people."

The fact that nintendo wont let them create new characters also majorly holds the series back. Theyve definitely beat up against that wall as much as they possible can to find little loopholes to work around it but it's still a major limitation.

as far as good stuff, all in all the story was actually pretty cute and good, I enjoyed it. the graphics look really good, definitely the best looking paper mario. the music is pretty good if a bit off for the paper mario series. and I think the boss fights were actually good. theyre a puzzle and kind of flip the whole battle system on its head.

Not at all the game I wanted but it was enjoyable. I hope the next one is closer to TYD tho.

I was too young to grow up with it but I never liked RPG style battle systems, which is why I prefer the wii game

I've spent hundreds rebuilding my N64 collection. Even then, it's not great on my HDTV, I need to either buy an UltraHMDI (probably never gonna happen) or buy a broadcast monitor. I'd be ok giving that money to Nintendo but they seem dead set on not letting anyone play the entire N64 library.

What's the bug one that was supposed to be good? Bug Fables?

    e: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1082710/Bug_Fables_The_Everlasting_Sapling/

This supposedly continues Paper Mario well enough, holy fuck 98% positive reviews.

i played bug fables, i went into it expecting not to like it bc I didn't really vibe with the bug stuff but it actually was really good. Haven't finished it because I fell off and ended up playing something else but I keep meaning to go back to it.

They also do a really cool job weaving the bug stuff into the lore in pretty cool and unique ways so it won me over in the end. If anyone likes paper mario a lot it's definitely worth checking out.

Bug Fables is good, folks. I haven't finished it (and I probably never will like 90% of games I play) but it perfectly captures the Paper Mario tone, and in terms of gameplay feels like a genuine sequel that an alternate reality Nintendo could have put out.
