A hippo could annihilate me if it wanted to, but it chooses not to, and I appreciate that.

They do choose to, and not too rarely either.

In places near where hippos live, they're known to be a mortal danger, and humans avoid them. You could feasibly make friends with an elephant. A hippo, probably not.
