Roujin Z is 1991, so it's not technically 80s, however, it's before the dissolution of the USSR and also before the economic crash, so spiritually I think it's still the 80s. It's about a robot bed meant to care for the elderly, but quickly blossoms into a great action-adventure with an 87 year old protagonist at the center. The character designs were done by Hisashi Eguchi of Stop!! Hibari-kun! fame and Satoshi Kon was the art director and set designer. Give it a watch!

This sounds great, and I especially love anything Satoshi Kon. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm not spoiling the best parts either. Watch it without knowing about the plot.
