In my opinion engaging critically with media is very important, it's basically impossible to find media that doesn't at least one problematic aspect. But by engaging critically with it you can recognize how these problematic areas inform other themes in the work so you avoid internalizing it unknowingly, and if you're into it you can build on it to use the good aspects and yeet the bad. For example, Lovecraft is someone whose works were very informed by his extreme racism but that doesn't mean his works can't be understood and even enjoyed if you know how his personal views are incporated into the text. Then someone like China Mieville can create works that are very clearly influenced by Lovecraft's work while incorporating communist and egalitarian themes to combat the racism that is so tied to Lovecraftian horror.

Also, Lovecraft changed his mind and became a communist right before he died.
