I wish they had just used the words destroyed and damaged instead my dumb brain keeps thinking that a ship can't die so you get to pick what that means because it could be damaged like even though it did not "die" and be unable to be used in future battles which is pretty much a death for a battleship in my mind, you need a new one, but yeah this cleared this up for me
"Sink" is the word we all need here because it's literally what they mean and the writer's decision to use figurative language here just isn't helpful.
