Farthest I've been so far is the vault, those robot dudes with shields are invincible to me, have no idea what kind of wand I'm supposed to bring to fight them. I had a glowing lance + missile + ping pong wand that run, thought it would wreck the robots but they just laughed at me.
mild spoiler if you haven't explored outside the mine
Also I have explored a little bit, died instantly in the pyramid, I made it to the ??? in the east side of the map and died to essence of earth (twice), made it to the orb room with the 3x gold curse and promptly died, haven't made it past the giant tree and have no real plan on how to do that. Also I know that you can backtrack to the mines through the tunnel in snowy depths.
I have a feeling I should probably explore Fungal Caverns more since it seems to have pretty good loot, but I get clapped by all the mobs there with 3x the hp of the mobs in the coal pits. Are there any tricks to getting somewhat decent wands by then? I've been doing collapsed mines and the best wands I find there are barely any better than the other ones you find in regular mines.
I guess I could always go directly through coal pit and use the polymorphine holy mountain skip, speedrun snowy depths so I can go back up to floor one, full clear collapsed mines, use holy mountain again to improve the wands I get in collapsed mines, do fungal caverns (I suspect fungal caverns has a way to connect to floor 5, but I've only been to floor 5 once so this is mostly unfounded), and continue normally. But this also sounds incredibly boring and requires too much back tracking.
Luminous drill + ping pong got me through a full run, add chainsaw or drill for lightsaber. Adding a single crit+ also like triples the damage bc the fire rate is so high .
Spell modifiers at the end of a wand wrap around to the beginning if there are no more spells. This can be used to speed up a wand with long recharge, and combined with multicasts and triggers it allows you to fire the first one or more spells on the wand twice per mouse click (trigger spells can’t be doubled this way to prevent infinite loops).
Chainsaws are cheap, reduce recharge time, and have a hidden modifier that reduces cast delay to zero for the current spell block.
So the basic pattern is
Double spell + add mana + chainsaw + spark bolt w/ trigger + any multicast + anythingAs long as you put fewer spells at the end than the last multicast expects, you now have a wand that fires infinitely at 3600 rpm. There are other good combos, but this will probably be the one that gets you your first win.
Ok thank you so much, I used this idea to do a run with a 3600RPM lumi drill ping pong (couldn't find chainsaw) and died to the dragon because I couldn't take a hint from the area literally called "dragon cave." Still easily the strongest wand I have made so far.
It's insanely fun. It's basically an open world roguelike. I haven't beaten it yet but apparently there's a lot of things to try even after you get your first few wins. Also it's very unlike games like Spelunky where there's a soft cap on how powerful you can get because there are only so many items. You could have a run with items that instantly destroy all enemies and literally the whole ground around you in seconds, but the catch is you need to learn what to look out for to craft those items yourself. I have 34 hours in it so far, but I learn something new every run.
Does it have a lot of weapon variety? It sounds a bit like binding of isaac with the item balancing but the main thing I love about tboi is the variety in what the different items do.
Hundreds of spells, and the major mechanic is wand-building using those spells. Some spells modify other spells, and post-endgame there are spells that modify modifiers. So it’s not only weapon variety but emergent weapon variety.
Well, you can make your own wands with a pretty large assortment of spells and spell modifiers. It's probably as varied as it gets, you can customize wands and make some very creative combinations of multicasts, support spells, and projectiles.
best thing I can recommend is taking things pretty slow (10 mins per stage) and treating it like a no-damage run, that is focusing on avoiding any damage from small bits of fire or toxic. doing so helped me get a lot better at avoiding damage in the game. also if you dont mind mild spoilers just scour the wiki for info on enemies, one big tip being that any robotic enemy is much more vulnerable to explosion or electricity damage (other damage types dont really do much). also when possible get a "trick kill" cuz they drop double money (trick kills are enemies dying by fire or a rock falling on them).
Well now, if you have 40 hours in the game I'm only 6 hours behind you B). But I agree, I have got pretty far with lightning wands because the stun is invaluable. I also find that wands that allow me to clear a room before entering it (anything I can make with explosions on a trigger) are useful in Hiisi base and onward.
