I like him, his writing is workmanlike, his characters often a bit immaturely written due to his limited life experience, though that is changing as he grows. He works best on single person chapters where he can bring out their inner thoughts.
His ability to write spectacle well, his diamond-hard-magic systems and extensive world-building are the reason to come and stay, along with the mysterious hidden Meta-plot that ties most of his series together like Moorcock and the Eternal Champion.
Start with Warbreaker, which is a)free b)more character-driven in a good way c)self-contained. Then if you like it move to Mistborn. The second Mistborn series (Wax and Wayne) has a character sympathy bait and switch which is amazing.
I like Stormlight better.
I haven't read anything by Brandon Sanderson yet, although I have watched his lectures on you tube.

I wouldn't start with Stormlight tbh, the shorter series are much better until you've got a handle on the meta-plot.
