The user reviews looked pretty bad, but then the first one I read was literally a chud just complaining about "gay leftist agenda" in the game, which I'm more than happy with. But is the game itself actually mediocre compared to the first like people are saying?

You're the one who's being shallow. Any story can be reductively simplified beyond recognition. "The Godfather is about how a life at the margins of society is bad lol." -> that's you
What you did was zero in on a random aspect in The Godfather, what I did was take the core theme of it and say that was the core theme.

nah story makes no sense, bad fucking writing, the gameplay is pretty sick tho. They spent a lot of time making it fun to play. The entire story is pointless.

User reviews on websites that don't verify people actually bought the game are 99% chuds raging about LGBT characters in the game. It has a 4.5/5 star rating from over 22 000 reviews on the playstation store from people that actually bought the game, so make of that what you will. I still need need to play it personally
It's really good and improves upon the first game. It was review bombed like crazy by chuds when it came out, so just ignore the user score on metacritic.
I'm actually about to replay it since it's been a while and Grounded difficulty is out, so if anything speaks to the game's quality it's that.
It was fun, but not as good as the first one in terms of story and characters. The gameplay is basically the same so if you like that in the first one you'd probably enjoy it. User scores aren't a great metric for this game because of how hard it got review bombed. I'll give it a 7/10
Its a very good game. Mechanics wise, it is essentially just an updated version of the first - the obvious evolution.
Personally I loved the story. It does kind of boil down to "revenge and killing are bad" but it presents the idea in a way far, faaaaaaaar more effective than any other narrative I've seen that attempts to present the same theme.
I know I can be a broken record but it felt like it had a lot of conservative themes
A lot of the voyeurism around lesbians and trans men stuck out to me, but then there is the default zombie apocalypse tropes that are bad
I thought it was great. If you liked the first one I'm sure you'll like this one. If you haven't played the first one, start there because it's a really great game. I think they improved the mechanics in the second one. The story is better in the first but the second has the added benefit of pissing off chud gamers because they added LGBTQ characters. I don't know if it's the sequel I would have chosen for one of my favorite games but I still had a lot of fun playing it and was pretty engaged in the story despite its flaws.
