The Star Citizen vaporware-grift starting with initial Kickstarter campaign and eventually culminating in over $550 million dollars (currently over $600 million) in crowd funding is the stuff of legends. The selling $10,000 spaceship DLC that doesn't exist for a game that doesn't really exist and people actually buying it, that alone is worthy of study. Regardless of how the shit show eventually ends, it will be taught about in university someday.
If I was still in college and I was shooting for some kind of related dissertation, I'd be tempted to write it about the vast number of interconnected factors over a decade that have lead into this present moment and beyond, powered primarily by aging gamedads with more money than sense.
I wonder how many of the people who were retired and announced they were going to spend their time playing this when it was announced have already died
a child born when the game was announced is now in the first year of middle school
the sprog has gone from being entirely unaware of their surroundings to being able to read, write, do basic mathematics etc.
