I know vaush posting is :haram: but holy shit watching a grown man go through his /mu/core phase like 12 years late is activating my fight or flight response.

i mean like half of the albums on this list are just like albums that were popular like half a decade ago that most normal people have heard at least a few songs off of. like legit, metallica is listed on it, like as if they're some super obscure act that no one's heard of. the other half is like relatively unknown stuff like death grips that people treat like a personality trait rather than just like a band that they listen to casually. like if /mu/ kids weren't annoying as fuck half of these albums wouldn't have a reputation as overhyped meme music in my head lmfao

NMH meme has been around for a long time. Godspeed is a meme going back to when I was in high-school, it's not even restricted to /mu/. It was a metal album/bad that you got into so you appear more intellectual than other nerds. Mars Volta was jumping off around that time too and used for the same reason. But it is a lot to do with late millennial nostalgia.

Whenever I see these lists of "essential music" or greatest songs ever or whatever, I find it funny that there's never any mention that its all in English and that they never considered any songs from other languages.

i mena tbf its def not easy to find non-english music when ur monlingual and live in the country that dominates worldwide culture.

I agree, especially pre-internet. But for a place like 4chan where a large portion of their user base watch anime, they’ve been exposed to non English music yet still will be dismissive of it when they make these lists. There’s also plenty of non English musicians that make the charts in the USA now, like bts. I am not really sure I have a point here, just an observation

true, i was mostly speaking from my own experience with non-english music. Most non-english music i've been exposed to has been like japanese and it's usually in genres im not fond of lmao. don't really pay attention to charts either, i mostly find new artists from ones that i like exposing me to them on twitter n shit and digging through genres i like on bandcamp so i really don't get too much exposure to non-english stuff unless i stumble on it.
