He only had this one guitar afaik, but he did apologize for it. I mean, it's Burkina Faso just after decolonization, there weren't that many people who could afford a guitar and an amp. But by western standards of that time, it wasn't a particularly expensive instrument. It would be today, because pre-CBS Fenders have become collector's items that sell for $25,000 in good condition even if they haven't been owned by a historic figure. But back then, it was a very reasonable choice if you wanted a quality instrument, much less expensive than the Gibsons that most jazz guitarrists preferred back then.
"As President, he lowered his salary to $450 a month and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a refrigerator, and a broken freezer" according to wiki. Kinda incredible
NOT SURE IF THIS IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AROUND HERE BUT SANKARA PLAYED GUITAR IN A JAZZ BAND
Is there any footage of him playing? Curious to see how he sounds.
The sidearm with pearl grips he carried was a gift from Kim Il Sung
