It's looking like my friend can only go through with a long term (at least 6 months) move overseas they've been working on if I take care of their cat.

I haven't offered this and am not particularly fond of this cat. I don't want to integrate another animal into my home.

Here's the kicker: the friend is a roommate so the cat already lives here (in their room).

Not sure what to do. Like I want my friend to get to go, but at what cost? I'm sure they'll resent it if I don't help, and I am ready for them to move out makima-think

But again I really don't like this cat very much, she's really unfriendly with our cat and dog.

I feel like it's unreasonable to not offer to help.

if you don't want to take care of the cat, tell them that you cannot, in no uncertain terms. you never said that you would, and they have no good reason to expect you to. pets are a responsibility, and they deserve to live with humans that have the time and care that they need. there are other people who can take care of it, and your friend needs to reach out to them.

my gf had a cat and i had a cat coming into this relationship. We acquired two more, but the original two cats hate each other the most(mostly the girl cat attacks my boy cat). I have a tall pet gate at the top of the upstairs steps, and my cat just doesnt jump really so he stays upstairs when we're not home. The girl cat is 14 and the boy is 8, so in theory we might have to do this setup for 4-6 years. So maybe something like that could be done in the short term? If the roommate will still pay rent or most of it, that would be worth it maybe. That's my best idea. If the roommate really loves the cat I'd probably help them out, but i've only had one other roommate and it's someone ive known 2/3 of my life so yeaaaaa. Also is the endgame that the roommate comes back to live with you or would they be getting their own place?

Yeah we could do a situation similar to what you describe. End game would be the roommate having their own place, but it might be in the other country, without the cat.

so they might stay in the other country for good? roomie needs to explain what happens if that's the case.

So I offered to care for the cat at least 6 months if roomie covered vet expenses, but roomie declined the offer and isn't going on their trip shrug-outta-hecks

They said they "didn't ask us for a reason" limmy-what which has me kinda offended but whatever. It's for reasons I can't understand.

you did say you don't like that cat cause it doesnt get along with your pets, so they were doing you a favor by not asking you. they didnt want to burden you. that's actually pretty considerate. although it's kinda wild this trip just suddenly isn't happening, doesnt sound like it was a very solid plan to begin with.

Do you know anyone that would want a cat and would maybe mesh with this one? Sounds like you're in an apartment situation which is not the best for a cat anyway.

I know this doesn't clearly point to a solution, but the issue derives from having animals as individual property.
