    Several coups and corrupt higher ups in the constituent republics figured they could separate and be big shots after Gorbachev let the satellite states go

        A good example is Lukashenko who has been president of Belarus for 26 years, literally since Belarus became independent. He had some political power before they split but obviously being uncontested president of a country is pretty damn attractive
