hey chapos a little background about me I come from a largely Irish-American family and as such was baptized Catholic but I spent most of my childhood bouncing around liberal/progressive Methodist churches and then more universal/inclusive theologies like Unity and Unitarian-Universalism all in Texas.
lately I've been feeling a need for a spiritual home to go pray in, probably because of how lonely quarantine times are, and i've been thinking about the role of religion/spirituality in life and the political sphere.
my theology is pantheist in that I believe the reality we live in is God, or divinity, and the mystery of life and the universe is the divine manifesting metaphysically. i've considered going to Quaker worship or back to Unitarian-Universalism, but I can't help but feel like my steadfast Marxism would be at odds with those belief systems. i was wondering if other chapos feel the same and if y'all had any suggestions.
UU's from what I can gather are pretty libby PMC types, but their heart is in the right place.
I don't necessarily see what would be specifically at odds with their beliefs in regards to marxism, atleast no more then any other church.Personally, I'd probably find a very laid-back church, perhaps a non-denominational church or something.
Why would Quakers be at odds with Marxism? I don't really know anything about them, but I thought they were politically kinda cool and had links to socialism?
my understanding of Quakers is that they tend to be pretty liberal politically and are pretty opposed to any sort of violence/revolution. there's also a lot of historical examples of big time Quaker capitalists/companies (like Barclay's) and when i reached out to a Quaker subreddit i got pretty tepid responses about their feelings on socialism and especially revolutionary socialism. some did point out though that Marx may have been influenced by John Bellers, a famous Quaker, so there is that
Thank you for this, I never knew much of this. I might attend my local Friends meeting some time. If nothing else I can just be a really bad Quaker in that I'm not so strict on the pacifist part.
