It's an open source app https://newpipe.net/ and it has a lot of features and doesn't requite a Google account.
It still connects directly to Youtube's servers tho so keep that in mind privacy wise. It's obviously way better than using Youtube's app
Here is how to add Newpipe repository to F-droid so that you can get the latest version as soon as it's available https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/
F-Droid is an open source alternative to Google Play and it only has free open source apps! I really recommend it!
Newpipe also let's you download audio or the full video, vanced doesnt. Newpipe is also working on soundcloud support! It mostly works, every once in a while it just randomly stops being able to connect to soundcloud (like once a month or less) but the newpipe team is pretty quick about getting out updates to fix it. And you can download audio from soundcloud through it no problem!
I prefer newpipe even though I have newpipe and vanced installed.
The ability to make playlists and queue everything in the background is the true killer feature of NewPipe
been using it for about a year and i can confirm, newpipe slaps. watching adds is for nerds.
F-Droid
hmm so I could buy a Huawei phone and not care that they're banned from the play store?
Yes. And with APKMirror and play store alternatives, you extra don't have to care.
the problem is that lots of stuff will still depend on Google's proprietary services and will either give you incessant errors, not give you notifications, or simply not work
Maybe replace your apps with FOSS ones first? If you can do that then sure!
thanks but i already use yt vanced so please please don't tell me it's actually malware cause i really really like all the features it has
I don't think it's malware, it's well trusted in the android community. Just make sure you installed the official version (from https://vancedapp.com/). Just remember your data is still being sent to Google.
I don't know much about Vanced really All I know is that it's a modded version of the Youtube app and that it has nothing to do with privacy oh and most importantly is that it's not open source. I really recommend you check out Newpipe because it has some cool features like downloads and it's FOSS and so on. You can find more about its features here https://newpipe.net/
And for Android TV there's SmartTube Next, which includes the SponsorBlock extension.
Seriously though I had the last thread about FOSS queued up to go revisit, but by the time I did, it had been deleted. So thank you for the reminder about F-Droid, and never stop posting.
Really appreciate this! Let me know if you are looking for FOSS alternatives btw I might be able to help. I'll try to keep posting :)
Check out this fork of NewPipe https://github.com/polymorphicshade/NewPipe
It integrates Sponsorblock and automatically skips embedded advertising (THIS COMMENT WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY SQUARESPACE). It was rejected by the original devs since they're not actually against advertising.
Would be great if the fork had its repo on F-droid but until then I'd just recommend vanilla Newpipe
the cia benefits from proprietary software because they can hide they bullshit in it with no repercussions.
