Pretty much. Going mask off and finding him not guilty would be a disaster and I'm pretty sure they know this, so let some steam blow off by convicting him and convincing people that hey the system really does work!
It's seems to me like they just can't help themselves, even when making any small concession would be in their best interest they keep going mask off and fucking working people and minorities over. It's like a weird compulsion to them.
