      This line of reasoning expects that the reader has some empathy for dogs, then works forward off of that to point out their lack of empathy for other comparable beings.

          Yes, the contention is that the claimed empathy is not actually empathy at all, it's fondness.

          These people in theory like dogs, they like having them around, and petting them, and playing with them.

          But to empathize with the pain an animal goes through when its life is taken is different. In that, there is no humane slaughter for an animal that wants to live.
