His new book turns to the changing fate of 'the west'. This means a revival of old forms of living: Techno-feudalism, Neo-religious orthodoxy, and ultra-nationalism.

"They can't understand that what they and other liberals call populism, is political blowback against the social disruption that their policies produced; They can't understand the connection between what they've done and populism."

That is one banger of an opening line I gotta say. It's hard to articulate this in such a great way as he did without coming off sounding like it's the left's fault for being too woke and alienating regular Joe Six Pack, while acknowledging that reactionary populism is driven in part by the social progressivism demonstrated by liberals at times, but with no real material substance to back it up. So all they are doing is thrusting marginalized people into the national spotlight without actual material support, angering reactionaries who also feel like they are being left behind in politics because there have been no tangible gains for working people to go along with the lip service paid to oppressed groups. And even though they are still wildly privileged and supported by the white supremacist state in countless ways, they are still alienated by capitalism and they don't even have the tools to understand the source of their own frustrations.

Back in the Obama days I used to get liberals really pissed when I asked why it was okay to force right wingers to accept gay marriage but not single payer healthcare. Never got an answer, just frothingfash
