This was something that could have actually happened. Big Bird was supposed to be on the last flight of the Challenger but the Muppet suit was too big. He was replaced by the teacher that died on that launch. It was very possible that many children's first experience with death would have been a beloved children's character dying on live TV.
If Cookie Monster died on Flight 93, I wonder if he would have been okay with being served peanuts or if he would have asked for cookies instead.
