If you're part of a protest, the riot cops are pretty good at keeping a straight face and not responding to provocation. If it's just a beat cop looking to meet their quota for the day, they might find a reason to hand you a court summons. Also you probably know this, but it makes a difference if you're white and/or look like an NYU student.

If you look like any sort of minority (racial, gender, sexuality, etc) it might go poorly if you're not in a group doing it like as a protest. Lilely they'll just ignore it but the roidrage could kick in or you might be a demographic they hate and are looking to abuse. Cops like to say shit like "they seemed intoxicated, they smelled like weed, I thought they had a weapon, they matched a description" and then they charge you for "resisting arrest" or "assaulting an officer" if they can't find real reasons to arrest you like drugs in your pocket, or a pocket knife
