        A person from the Suez Canal Authority boards every vessel that goes through and pilots it. I’m not sure about smaller boats though.

      Technically they do, at least in the US Navy I know that only in the Panama Canal does a captain hand over responsibility to the pilot, everywhere else the pilot is on board giving direction but the captain still has final authority.
