    Capybaras are the largest rodent, so I assume they're also the best rodent. You need two though, and a kiddie pool or something, because they're very social and aquatic animals.

    Rats are incredible, and if you treat them well (namely I think fixing them and letting them run around often) they can live up to 3 years. Mine have been going strong for 2.5 years now. It does suck when they die but I don't think any rodents live for more than a few years unfortunately

    Also FWIW they have decent eyesight and all the rats I've handled (both as pets and at the store) have been curious and not defensive. Never got bitten by one. Hamsters on the other hand are total assholes.

      Now I'm imagining a gerbil with little reading glasses and it's very cute
