Trial of the Chicago 7 was hot garbage.
They made Tom Hayden, an anti imperialist marxists, a career soc dem with a respectability fetish and obsession with American lives lost.
They made Abbie Hoffman, an anarcho communist and revolutionary, a liberal who believed that the problem with the US was that Nixon was the president.
They made Jerry Rubin look like a dope.
They left out the best parts of the trial, from abbie hoffman insisting he was born in the 60s, to Ginsberg reading erotic poetry on the stand, to to hoffman calling the jewish judge a nazi in Yiddish, to Phil Ochs being cautioned for singing on the stand, to everyone calling the judge a fascist pig, to people refusing to swear "in the presence of ladies", to hoffman insisting Washington was a stoner, so much was left out
What was left in was sanitized. Bobby seal was bound for 3 minutes in the movie, 3 days in real life. He was not concerned about police brutality, he was against the whole white capitalist power structures down to the slave owner whose portrait hung on the wall. Abbie and ruben were no longer revolutionaries, but edgy liberals. Hayden was made from a stalinist to a soc dem.
Then, needless violence and conflict was inserted. At one point, imaginary frat boys are mad that a woman has an american flag, so they attempt to rape her, only for her to be saved by Jerry Rubin. They make a committed pacifist punch a balif. They add ed tension between hayden and hoffman. Why? There was already so much tension in the original.
One of the most offensive parts for me was when sorken used hoffman as his mouth peice and made a jewish communist quote gospel while advocating for american democracy
I also have multiple stylistic complaints I'm not gonna start on.
