My maternal grandfather’s family came from Ukraine right before it happened there. He was born in Siberia already and always told me how communists killed his grandfather as a kulak, and the entire family had to trek from Chernigov area to Ob river in Siberia. Lots died, but probably not as many would’ve died should they stayed.

Personally, I wouldn’t put it past soviet regime leaders to choose Ukraine as a designated sacrifice, so to speak. There is a twisted logic in localizing the worst economic effects of your new policy in just one region and letting others go on unperturbed. Besides human suffering it’s a much better strategy than potentially destroying peasantry in the entire country.
