I really appreciate you saying that. Not really at a good place in my life right now (who is!), but if/when that changes we'll see. Still got all my old equipment!
What kind of setup did you use to have?
A huge influence on my personal taste was Macronympha and their audio of mechanical chaos: the sound of a factory in its death throes. For a time I was working doing repair on laundry equipment—what's called "OPL" or on-premises laundry, the big machines they use in hospitals, nursing homes, hotels and the like. A lot of these big machines, when the washing hits the extract cycle to spin out all the water, can deliver over 100 Gs of force depending on how loaded they are. When a belt's wearing out or when a drum bearing is near failure you can get some incredible and terrifying sounds. Used a lot of those layered with distortion and a neat boutique ring modulator I think I still have somewhere. It was a while ago and I lost any backups I had unfortunately.
I've got this one on LaserDisc as well. It's a neat little artifact. If I remember correctly it also came out on the Beta tape format, and the VHS/Beta releases also came with an audio cassette of the main character's phone sex dialogue.
Hi, big noise fan here. I've posted a little bit in /music in the past and if there's interest I can post a lot more. Used to do a little bit of my own back 15 years or so ago but it was not very good and I didn't really put any of it out there.
Little Incapacitants story here: I was fortunate enough to see them at their very first live performance in the US. Despite being an active unit since the early 80s, the first time they arrived over here was in 2007 for the multi-night No Fun Fest show in Brooklyn. Mikawa-san works for a bank and Kosakai-san is a government employee, so the organizer of the fest intentionally scheduled the 2007 festival for a date when there would be a bank holiday in Japan so they could attend. Got some great pics. The set came out later on CD.
Top-tier noise and excellent guys in general. A documentary was put out a couple years ago about them and is a pretty good watch. (CW for video: strobe lights)
A long time ago I had an idea for a Weird Al-style Minutemen parody called Double Pickles in the Brine but, not being a musician, that was the full extent of my creative impulse
You see, the thing about distortion pedals is once you've had a FX59, you'll never go back to a DS-1!
Bypass Paywalls is a pretty good one that does what it says on the tin. Certainly doesn't work for every site, but it hits quite a few notable ones.
My dream is for Criterion to do a big book release of Herzog's stuff, everything, TV docs and all, like they did for Bergman and The Olympics, but the rights involved have to be an absolute nightmare. Both the box sets that Shout! and BFI did are good enough for now, but there's still so much that's missing.
Hearts And Minds and Matewan are excellent, topical works that nicely align with what I'm sure are much of our political ideologies here.
There's an unfortunate lack of Herzog in the collection, but Les Blank's Burden Of Dreams is a good stopgap.
Pretty much every David Cronenberg work in the collection is stellar. The editions of Videodrome and Scanners are top tier.
The Seventh Seal is a personal favorite, the first Criterion I ever bought back in 2002, and one of the most deeply affecting movies I've seen to this day.
I used to play a lot of Q3 CPMA, which incorporated a lot of QW/Q2 physics to make Q3 a lot more conducive for one on one duelling. Being able to move at that speed was super invigorating and enough practice tended to heighten your reflexes enough to excel at a lot of other FPS games as well. When I headed to local LANs I would usually clean up.
Now I'm older and slow as fuck, of course.
Only joined for da filez
Think I've got a split 8-track somewhere that they did a side for, great shit
Yeah that's what thermonuclear weaponry is. Originally fusion of hydrogen isotopes, in the arsenal since the 50s.
Christ, just try zooming out bit-by-bit in any of the surrounding areas.
Just a thoroughly banal, sickening, cookie cutter exurb hellscape. There's no fucking life here right now, let alone in the decades to come when the sands thankfully swallow it up.
I've heard tell somewhere that he ain't a phony.
I used to skate back when I was a young'un. My only tip: don't start out pushing mongo no matter how comfortable it might seem; you'll risk getting too used to it and then you might have difficulty pushing with regular footing, which is better. Too me a long time to break the habit.
“fiscally conservative, socially liberal.”
Tons of us were, I think, so don't feel bad about it. Fiscally conservative, socially liberal has been babby's first alternative political ideology for the past 20 years, and I think a significant amount of posters here will identify as former libertarians. I know I do. I voted Badnarik in 2004.
I'm very fortunate to work for a partially family-owned retail business, so I've got a kind of captive audience. I am pretty sure the two owners know I'm a communist, even though I can't specifically remember mentioning it. During the first height of COVID when we were closed to the public and it became more and more clear that capitalism was obviously not capable of effectively responding to a crisis, they were very receptive, and by the time the Third Precinct building in Minneapolis was torched they were cheering right along with me.
