  • Cool that that's your opinion, I have the opinion that one can generally judge actions by their nature. In my opinion raping someone is bad, Using nuclear warheads is bad, using the military against (any) civilians is bad, and especially if it is against your own people they are supposed to protect.

This doesnt mean I have to have a black and white opinion which will never under any circumstances change, but I generally condemned such actions. The goal in my opinion must always be to move towards a peacefull and just society without oppression, if the outcome is the killing/opressing of your own people there is something fundamentally flawed with the system which needs to be addressed.

    To play the game:

I have seen people call capitalists "left" because they wanna make "social democracy" capitalism, I have seen people called right wing who literally wanted a dictatorship without markets. Those terms can refer to anything an are meaningless in today's discourse.

What would you do when the "doppelte ausrufung der republic" happens in Germany? Would you say the socialists there where right wing because a lot of them were in favor of (deeply controlled) capitalistic markets?

--> you see, those ways of argumenting simply don't actually make a point.

  • You are not making a point by asking those questions...

If you think those where legitimate actions but generally think of yourself not as an authoritarian kind of person and in your book you don't fall under the definition of tankie, you may very well think so.

I believe many people would argue that if you are in favor of any kind of violence against the own civil populations with the army this brings you over the edge. But even if so, this doesn't make you as as person atankie, no questions asked, case done.

You can be generally against nuclear power except in one very specific case, scientific long time submarines for example, this doesn't make you a nuclear enthusiast. In my oppinion its the same with tankie, but if you find an excuse for every or nearly all instances (by socialist/left/eastern block) it paints a picture that suggests you may be generally in favor of such measures if they are done by an entity you sympathise with, which would make the term fitting in my opinion

If you believe the term can refer to entities who are not on the left wing side of the political spectrum, you may be in a minority. But one could of course take those positions... I would strongly disagree with this one personally though, and I don't think this is how a lot of people use the term. I think most people use it to describe a portion of the socialist/communist spectrum, again the boundary is blurry but the direction is quite clear. (which gives you the answer for most of your questiom btw.)

    Now let's turn the table:

Do you think the terms "left-wing" and "right-wing" are meangless/useless?

If not could you please define them for me?

Edit: some typos Also: you keep referring to states, which of course helps some ways of your argumentation but I think its mostly used for people, not nations

  • I assumed people would be smart enough themselfs to know that the term is directed at left wing entities.

My definition must be 100% correct and .ml and hexbear try to disprove it from every vector, people purposely ignoring the context and the rest of the comment, but Just stating "the term means nothing" without any arguments or evaluating further than "its like woke" appears to be a good argument to them...

Then my argument just is: "It means something" "its like >left-wing<" That should be equally appealing.

Edited for at least a bit less sassyness

  • Woke: from civil right movement, someone who is weary of loyalty to the state and instead examines society/policy/politics himself. - in modern times used as slur against progressive and ecological conscious people by right wing people.

Tankie: Someone who is authoritarian to a degree he sees using the army (tanks) against the own civilian population as a valid and legitimate action. Sometimes used as slur by people against those measures (or generally highly authoritarian top down approaches of state theory) or as (positive) self reference by people in favor of such measures (or generally highly authoritarian top down approaches of state theory)

Don't know what your problem is defining both.

EDIT: Not to be confused with "I know exactly who a tankie is and who isn't - my definition is 100% correct" or even "there are exact boundaries and conditions to what a tankie is"

Its like "peace", " progressive", "right-wing", different people will give you different definitions, my point is, that there is a concept to which the word refers and different interpretations/ambiguities don't render the term useless simply by existing.

  • Plus: its google/us hardware. They could always hide something in lower level software like drivers or bios.

(Cant find the arricle i was thinking of, maybe false): It was recently discovered that snapdragons pinged their home server when turning on, which was not noticeable in android as it was on a deeper software level

  • If you want to be sure you cant be tracked, monitored, spyed on, and calls can't be intersepted:

Don't ever connect it to WiFi and don't insert a sim card.

Graphene or not, your ISP can still share your position or other meta data with government and stuff (in the us they can also be forced to not tell you) - in some countries they legally sell to third party's, in some probably illegaly

Calls are normally not encrypted so the os doesn't matter as much if its the government who can force your ISP or if someone is skilled enough for a Man in the middle attack.

Android is a highly complex system, it will never be 100% safe.

If you just want to decrease spying by companies and less powerful people:

Use neo store or fdroid (no google play or aurora) as all apps there are Foss

Don't install gapps or any other google services/packages

Use shelter for less trusted apps

Use netguard to block apps from accessing the internet

    Physically block your cameras

If you want to be absolutely sure no one is recording audio: destroy mics with a needle and connect headset only when you need it

To only use communication apps which are encrypted and you hold the keys should be not needed to be said: matrix, signal, element, xmpp are good, (telegram (normal chats), Facebook, WhatsApp etc is a no go)

  • Okay maybe I'm mixing up lemmygrad and hexbear in my head a little bit to much, but alone the "we are very nuanced abut realsocialism, what you mean are just insincere memes, don't take them seriously" doesn't fit with the "we always argue in good faith, we are just sometimes not that polite" another hedbear user stated in this thread.

I think for people being tankies you could just dismiss the dumb comments as jokes, as you see quite few of them. When being actually wholeheartedly of the opinion that Stalins way of running a country is bad for not only minorities but everyone else and also inhumane, you get a lot of hate.

Sure you can say all the hate are jokes, all constructive discussion is for real, but that's making it to easy in my opinion.

The only discussions I head with hexbear people that were productive were the ones where they where on a different instance than their own, and arguing against multiple people, they sometimes made good arguments, but as soon as there where lots of them you would just get buzzwords and name calling along with down voting ton oblivion.

As for the "we are a colorful left scene", I kinda doubt that... Every time even I mentioned people like horkheimer or ardorno or said that the world isn't automatically a paradise as soon as someone gets president who calls himself socialist, I got called liberal and right wing and so on.

  • But Chanel of what they call left is much MUCH narrower than most people think of it.

If you don't want to get banned you better not only be communist but also authoritharian as can be, you dont only love Marx and lenin, but you better also love Stalin, modern day russia and north Korea.

If you think of yourself as a Marxist communist, but don't agree with Stalins methods, you're a "libtard" to them and they won't even argue with you but only make fun and downvote you (or if on their instance often ban you)

Its the place tankies got to circlejerk, its no place for discussion or sharing/refining of left ideas.

Either you love Stalin like a god or you are a libtard, thats what I have seen from hexbear and lemmygrad users (not that different of clientele from what I have seen)

  • Thanks for the detailed response. I'm sure my IP is most relevant in tracking me, but if I'm tracked while visiting Lemmy/YouTube it would do no harm, while correlating my YouTube activity with my e.g. me reading websites the government doesn't like would do harm.

I use mullvad, and previously read using tor through a VPN doesn't really make sense. I have Firefox set to not save cookies, but I have made an exception for YouTube as it is to troublesome to log in with 2fa all the time.

My thought was that it may be easier to match up the fingerprint of @somelemmyuser accessing lemmy with the fingerprint of @somelemmyuser downloading capitalist propaganda while living in China if they come from the same VPN in a similar timeframe, while it would be harder to match the fingerprint of @somelemmyuser acsessing Lemmy from an normal ISP to the fingerprint of @somelemmyuser accsessing capitalist propaganda from a VPN, as you would need both datasets to find matches.

And since me accessing Lemmy is not a problem but my lemmy account could be tracked back to me as a physical person, it could be smart to not do it with the same VPN.
