The Zoltan cruiser is much easier to use when you read the wiki and realize its beam can still do damage through one layer of shields

Something I was wondering, if the lasers both fire at the same time and both hit the enemy shield at once, it's not redundant or wasted, right? It didn't seem to be, but I never went and freeze framed it to be sure.

Layout A has the BL2 and Layout B has the Zoltan crew member, those are the only two versions of the ship that I have. Which do you think would be better to do what you're describing?
