They're discovering new oil reserves all the time. There's no danger of oil running out; it is merely uneconomic at the current rate. When the price goes up, the oil becomes economic to extract.
Petroleum isn't just used for fuel, but for plastics as well. Plastic is just about the most useful material ever invented. Light, strong, and most importantly cheap. You can say you'd like to live in a world without plastic, but everything you buy would become ruinously expensive and you'd be in poverty. Just look around the room you're in right now and start identifying all the things made of plastic. It would take you a half hour to list them all.
If you're already in poverty never mind. You'd just be in super-duper poverty, which isn't that different except you'd have only one wooden bowl and spoon, and you'd carve them yourself from a tree branch.
The funny thing is if you're trying to stop drinking you need something better than alcohol and alcohol is pretty good. So you better find something a lot better. You want to figure out something that you're doing with your life that's worth not getting drunk and screwing up.
Because you want to have something on the other side of that teeter-totter that has some value. So that you can think no no I'm not going to get drunk and screw that up. You might say well why do people drink too much? If you like alcohol that's a stupid question. It's like why do people drink too much, well because it's great. You need something better than that.
You need an adventure, you need to get out there and have something to do and and something worth waking up for. That's the substitute for the addiction. (Actually the addiction is the substitute for that if truth be known.) Eventually you can flip that around and you can find there's a lot of weight in having self-worth.
