I think analysis of the games really suffered due to how young the audience for it was. Like you have people reading MGS2 as predicting social media because the timeline of the internet is skewed for them to the point they aren't aware that Kojima was talking about existing BBS and forums in 2001. The entire context that the game was written by a well off Japanese dude who had access to all these emerging technologies during the height of the dot com bubble sort of got lost.

  • i almost just want to shake these morons and point out the entire reason they are so enthralled by the world in bloodborne, but can't remember what they did for an entire 20 hours in other fantasy games is because of the more intricate characterizations that come from not just making everything evil for no reason.

it's like that bit from the rlm videos about how you don't notice, but your brain does. if the characters are capable of complex motivations, then there's a reason for the player to care why the game world is the way it is and an underlying logic to how everything functions. you can actually infer and extrapolate things from the game world which is why there are a bajillion lore videos for bloodborne while nobody gave a fuck what the aliens in crysis were doing.

  • it's because a lot of the left essentially uses theory as a substitute for class consciousness. people have a general understanding of historical class conflict, but because of wealth, race, education, and other segregating effects were able to opt out of any mutual struggle alongside the modern subjects of that theory.

it's not that you would necessarily need to be an amazon worker in a warehouse to understand what is going on there, but alternative would be either commissioning your own detailed studies or doing firsthand research which generally doesn't happen. there's just a lot of social commentary built on other social commentary which is treated as theory and in turn is treated as class consciousness.
