Is this like those Confederate statues where they don't put it up until...

The memorial was erected in 2004

    ... Called it.

Fucking figures. So much of what is no widely presented by Ukrainian Nationalists as the "True" history has only relatively recently become mainstream after decades of culture war.

It was "only" put up 13 years after Ukrainian independence, but it's still suspiciously close to the point where a wedge started to drive between the two countries.

I'm still sketchy on all the details but I think that the revision of Ukraine's Soviet History started shortly before or immediately upon the Independence of the country, with Banderites in Galacia jump starting the process of building a right wing Ukrainian nationalism. It sort of grew in fits and starts over the years, gaining more and more influence in western Ukrainian culture and politics, until we hit the Maidan coup where it officially seized power.

Like there's the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, but there's also the conflict within Ukraine between right wing Nationalists and Banderites centered in Galacia on one side and all the normal Ukrainians, including ethnic Russian Ukrainians, on the other.
