Incidentally, when I was recently in the occupied Dakota homeland, I was also very much struck by how a lot of cars didn't have license plates at the front. The first few times I saw this, I thought that the license plate must've broken off and the car owner was probably going to get it fixed soon, but eventually I realized that that's just how cars are there.
It's also always been striking to me as an anime fan how similar all the schools in anime are. I'm not sure if I ever actively reacted to the cookie-cutter schools being "unrealistic", since I'd also seen some Japanese schools in real life and live action and therefore knew that anime schools have a basis in real life; but either way, I think the sameness of every school in anime is part of why the anime school setting starts to feel so done-to-death after a while.
