Both the main instances I hang out on on Lemmy came from subreddits that got shutdown actually. Lemmygrad is where GenZdong ended up.
I was hanging out in /r/lsc mostly when they got shut down so wasn't really familiar with the lore but stumbled across Lemmygrad because people were bitching about "tankies" and figured I needed to make an account. Made one here after Hexbear federated and been mostly here since.
I don’t understand hexbear or Chapo, to be honest.
All I knows is, some of their values hold very dear to some of mine.
I don’t even know what “liberal” means anymore though, so I don’t understand the liberal hate? But I don’t politic very well, which means I probably don’t fit in there that well. I could learn, but I’m just too… tired.
The way that Hexbear and Lemmygrad use "liberal" is in the traditional political and economic sense. A liberal is someone that supports a Capitalist system.
This is different from US politics where a liberal is a Democrat and a conservative is a Republican(for the most part). This is a more modern definition and it makes sense that it can get confusing. I try to check myself with who I am talking with regarding how I use it.
If you see value overlap, I might suggest reading up on some theory(if you love reading some dry, sometimes boring stuff written 100 years ago) to see what all you might agree with regarding socialism and communism. My main 3 books I recommend to anyone that sounds interested in learning is Principles of Communism bu Friedrich Engels, State and Revolution by Lenin, and Blackshirts and Reds by Micheal Parenti.
I had a similar "well I actually agree with this" moment a lot on reddit and finally decided to figure out what my world view is a few years ago so I get what you are saying. I even just now saw some infighting over on /r/lsc with a user confused by another user calling Bernie Sanders a lib.

Hexbear is just a leftist Lemmy group.
