Minoxidil and Finasteride are FDA-approved for slowing hair loss (backed up by clinical trials), and may provide some hair regrowth, but you have to take/apply them forever. They're both available as generics.

Minoxidil can be sold over-the-counter (Rogaine is minoxidil) while finasteride requires a prescription.

Well, you don't have to take them for the rest of your life if you handle the source of the problem directly...

Male pattern baldness is caused by dihydrotestosterone, the only way to stop it is to stop your body from converting overall testosterone to DHT with finasteride, or by significantly dropping all testosterone levels with anti-androgens (or orchiectomy I suppose)

There are not. Hair loss is genetic. So short of gene therapy, you're stuck with it.

I don't use either because I'd rather lose my hair than deal with that shit forever, but topical minoxidil, while less effective, has significantly fewer side effects and you can just buy it in bulk online. Ignore this.

minoxidil promotes hair growth while finasteride slows hair loss

if you stop minoxidil, the hair growth that occurred because of it will eventually fall off and doesn't grow back. if you stop finasteride, then the hair loss will speed back up again
