I'm just not really fond of Doom Slayer, he was very edgy in the first reboot and while they do turn up a bit of cheese in Eternal, I just don't really care for him.
Not that Doomguy has much charm outside of supplemental material and fan content, but I still like him more.
Same. Maybe i'm just a crotchety old reactionary but back in my day we just needed some random guy with a super shotgun and a chainsaw to... well I don't think anyone was saved but he definitely killed a whole fuckload of people.
The whole " doomguy is actually a magic space demon with a magic sword" thing has been very "eh, i guess, whatever the kids are in to".
Every DOOM mod is canon, so they say, and it's justified by Doomguy choosing to stay in Hell at the end of Final Doom or Doom 64 (don't remember which) to keep killing demons to take his revenge on them. Time is all fucky in Hell so for thousands of years he roamed around killing demons before they trapped him, and then we pick up the story on the Samuel Hayden (who is somehow also an angel) timeline where Hell is used as a source of electrical power.
The idea of this thread was more about what you call the main character of Doom. Calling the main character of the old games Doom Slayer is revisionism, and I will not allow it.

The only background info we needed about Doomguy was that he's the descendant of the dude from Wolfenstein3D.
Aren't they canonically the same dude?
I canonically have no idea.

Eternal heavily implies this.
actual spoilers of Doom Eternal if you're into that sicko stuff
Doom Guy goes to hell one too many times, loses his mind, and gets Hulk'd
