On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

Whats has been your favorite post/event from last year (july 2023-july 2024)?

I wont lie, all the fedidrama has been fun to read, especially when libs wander here

Megathreads and spaces to hang out:

reminders:

  • 💚 You nerds can join specific comms to see posts about all sorts of topics
  • 💙 Hexbear’s algorithm prioritizes comments over upbears
  • 💜 Sorting by new you nerd
  • 🌈 If you ever want to make your own megathread, you can reserve a spot here nerd
  • 🐶 Join the unofficial Hexbear-adjacent Mastodon instance toots.matapacos.dog

I think i could win a cooking competition but i don't want to have to do some bullshit like every competition i've ever seen has some fucked up game show bullshit added on and i don't want none of that. I just wanna cook the same dish as another person and be told how much better mine is

They have thar for pizzas. There's an annual worldwide contest in Vegas each year my chef goes to. It works that way but everyone brings their own ingredients and stuff. This can make things harder for those who fly in cause bringing fresh vegetables across international borders isn't very allowed so they gotta find a grocery store in Vegas and hope it has shit they need. I've done (and won) some local inter-restauraunt things that get voted by customers. It's only really televised stuff that has the whole game show thing. I'd like to try that as well cause weird mandatory ingredients and hacky twists would be kinda fun to operate around.

We've been really busy this week which oddly enough means I make less food, I'm locked to the window more. I have gotten our baked brie app to a point people are coming in just for it. It's a full damn wheel of brie, scored and baked with garlic confit, plated with the garlic, peach slices, spicy honey to lock stuff down, blueberries, dried cranberries, candied walnuts and fried rosemary with toast points. I can't taste it myself cause cheese but I have heard it's mind shattering and I've got a really pretty plating and tonight 2 other people plated them cause I was busy and people tend to 'help me' by just grabbing dishes and playing them instead of asking what I need next, it's irritating, and I specifically don't like other people doing this one cause they both looked sloppy as hell. Basically, I wanna be no half measures Walter for especially that one.

I've only been in one competition myself (won it, btw), but it was fairly tame. Craziest stuff I've seen in competitions is if it's for a state fair or something and you're forced to cook with starfruit or calarabi or something.
