The Walgreens near me just quietly removed those freezer door screens that just give you information about the products in the freezer and went back to, you know, just being glass you can see through to see what’s in the freezer. So yeah wouldn’t surprise me if this ends up backfiring on them.

I do think the main reason behind that was the stupid freezer door screen company went out of business and all of their freezer door screens fucking bricked lmfao

When that happens, the underlying code ought to be forced to go open source so anyone who bought the product/service can at least keep it running in house.

I think it was a case of one of the major Walgreen people also being invested in the company behind the screens.

Oh, lol, it's even more of a clusterfuck. There is/was a whole lawsuit over the rollout.

                https://www.pymnts.com/legal/2023/walgreens-cooler-screens-clash-over-digital-advertising-technology/

The dispute arose after Walgreens installed Cooler Screens’ technology, which replaces traditional cooler doors with digital screens that play targeted ads, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Monday (Oct. 2). Cooler Screens is now suing Walgreens, claiming the pharmacy chain obstructed a nationwide rollout of the technology and demanded its removal from stores.

Reached for comment by PYMNTS, Cooler Screens said in an emailed statement: “Walgreens is trying to deflect attention from its poor retail performance by falsely blaming others for its problems and poor stock performance.”

                The kicker!

The company is backed by Microsoft, and its co-founder is Gregory Wasson, a former CEO of Walgreens.

Target went from "no more self checkout" to "closes at 8pm" to "10 items or less" in like a month. I still avoid them solely because of that (and all the other crap), but when I do go it, the guys don't stop me with ~20 items because I scan real fast.

Walmart switched to signs saying self-checkouts are for 15 items or less but still only have a single register open, and that single register line doesn't move because some asshole at the front is arguing with the cashier while trying to run a scam.
