i suspect it would be possible to find out (or at least build a compelling case) if you were sufficiently dedicated but to be completely honest i would simply rather confront the issue outright based on the suspicion rather than skulk around attempting to put together a timeline replete with citations et al. the mods will either be honest or they won't. if they refuse to level with us about something like "one of our moderators has been up all night harassing everyone in sight" then imo we have a significantly worse problem on our hands than we would if the issue were only that the mod team placed their trust in the wrong individual (or perhaps prioritized friendship over the health of the site, etc whatever the reason may have been).

i think choosing to protect this individual from this point on is only going to cause further harm to the site, regardless of how we got here or who knew what and when.

I 100% agree. I have no interest personally in dedicating myself to finding out the truth of these things using timelines and corkboards with strings and pins, I just thought it might be a situation where it was an open secret where the truth was already known just not spoken of, since all of this has been news to me. But I have a better understanding of the situation now, so thanks.

Whatever the case, like you I would sure as hell hope that one of the things to come out of this whole debacle would be a reassessment of whether this certain individual should remain a mod or if they should even be re-permabanned, because this is intolerable behavior. A broader reassessment about who should have mod powers in general might be in order too, even if all of this is just a tangent to the "low effort dunk post" issue that kicked this off.
