I'm not a fan of refried beans either. It just feels too much like baby food slop to me, but I haven't had it much so I don't know.
What I like to do with beans is fry them in a bit of oil with garlic powder, black pepper, and smoked paprika, adding in onions later on so they don't get burned. Then depending on what I'm feeling like I could add one or more of the following: white/red wine, nooch, garam masala, dried basil, oregano, diced tomatoes, celery, sriracha, grace sauce, chili flakes, cayenne pepper, cumin, or turmeric.
So basically, I don't always have the same combination of spices/sauces every time, or the same type of beans every time, so beans never really get boring for me, even though it's not the only high-protein food I eat.
